Aspire to be better citizens – Prosper Bani charges pupils

Former Chief of Staff Mr. Douglas Prosper Bani has admonished pupils of St. Sylvanus Roman Catholic Basic 1 and 2 schools at Pokuase to take their academic work seriously to become great citizens for their community, the Church, Ghana and the world at large.

He added that becoming a great citizen involves taking the time to work on individual values and building self confidence.

The former Interior Minister who was speaking at this year’s citizenship week celebration organized by the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE), emphasized on the power of individuals to effect change in their respective environments.

“This is what I want you to take home and build yourself with as you grow. You need to educate yourself, become a great citizen for your community, your, Church, your country, and the world. That the environment is critical for sustaining life therefore, we have to protect it all the time. Galamsey, littering, to bad farm practice are all dangerous to our environment. So let’s protect it now.” He advises.

The citizenship week celebration which was introduced in 2012, seeks to remind basic school pupils of their responsibilities as active citizens, and the role they play in building a strong, and a Democratic Ghana.

It is also a platform in which eminent personalities who are considered role models in society interact and impart some knowledge of good citizenship into the pupils in basic schools across the country.

The Ga North municipal officer in charge of the NCCE, Madam Faustina Blewusi urged pupils to be disciplined, tolerant, patriotic and keep the environment clean.

She revealed that, the NCCE is targeting 10, 000 basic schools across the country in a bid to promote Ghana’s democracy to the citizenry through education.

She presented pens and other souvenirs to pupils who asked relevant questions at the event.

Headmaster of the St Sylvanus Roman Catholic School, Mr Isaac Kofi Oppong was grateful to the former Chief of Staff Mr. Prosper Bani and NCCE for inspiring and imparting knowledge to pupils of his school.

The theme for this year is “Ghana, One People, Our Values, Our Sovereignty In Participatory Democracy and the sub theme is A Clean Ghana, Our Responsibility.
