The Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr Frank Amoakohene, has issued an official statement following the shooting incident that occurred on Saturday, 29 November 2025, during a funeral at Obuasi, which left a traditional ruler injured.
According to the Ashanti Regional Coordinating Council, the incident happened when a firearm was discharged at the funeral grounds, resulting in injuries to Nana Okofo Kwabena Bonsu, the Adanse Dompoasehene.
Police officers at the event intervened swiftly and arrested the suspect, 30-year-old Nana Yaw Dankwa, who is currently in custody and assisting with ongoing investigations.
The minister emphasised that the incident underscores the importance of the temporary national ban on the use of firearms during funerals and traditional gatherings, a directive issued by the Ministry of the Interior.
“This directive remains a vital public safety measure designed to protect lives, prevent injuries, and ensure that community events are conducted in a peaceful and dignified atmosphere,” the statement said.
The minister further appealed to the public to comply strictly with the ban, noting that adherence is essential for maintaining order and safeguarding the well-being of attendees at public events.
The injured chief reportedly received medical treatment and has since been discharged home.
Dr Amoakohene also called for calm, urging the public to support the ongoing work of security agencies.
“The Council reaffirms its commitment to preserving peace, enhancing safety, and upholding the rule of law across the region,” he added.
The suspect remains in custody as police investigations continue into the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
