Ashanti GJA chairman shot dead

Kumasi, Feb 10, GNA - Unknown gunmen on Friday night shot and killed Mr Samuel Kwabena Ennin, the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), at a popular spot at Pankrono Estate in Kumasi.

Mr Ennin, the Editor of the Ashh FM, a local radio station in Kumasi, was relaxing with some staff and friends of the radio station when he was shot.

According to eye witnesses the assailants, who were in an unregistered white saloon car, entered the spot and without any provocation shot the deceased in the stomach after firing indiscriminately to frighten customers.

The assailants entered their vehicle and drove away. Mr Ennin was taken to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital where he died. A source at the Ashanti Regional Police Command told the GNA that the Police had stepped up its investigation machinery to arrest the culprits.

Colleague journalists in Kumasi received the news with shock and dismay and wondered what might have instigated the shooting. Residents in Kumasi have described the death as shocking, mischievous and barbaric.

Mr Ennin was the host of the "Point of Order", a political magazine programme of the station that is aired on Saturday mornings. He was also a regular panel member of the station's Morning Show programme dubbed "Ash Ade Akyeabia".
