Ashaiman Residents Block Road With Refuse

Accra (Greater Accra) -- Residents of Jericho and Lebanon, suburbs of Ashaiman, have since Sunday been throwing refuse on the road to block traffic between Ashaiman and Zenu.

This is because the refuse container that was placed near the VALCO Flats lorry park had been removed to another area that is considered muddy and the residents claim they cannot walk in the mud.

The residents told the Ghana News Agency that they would continue to throw their refuse on the road unless the Tema Municipal Assembly (TMA) relocates the refuse container to a more suitable place.

TMA sources said the assembly had sold the area where the refuse container was to someone who wants to build a fuel filling station.

The muddy new site that the container was relocated to is said to belong to a Moslem group which also will not like the place to be used for refuse dumping.

A spokesman for Terrywhite, the contractor for Ashaiman, said the Municipal Chief Executive, Mr Samuel Evans Ashong Narh, directed the company to clear the huge refuse.

"We spent the whole of Monday to do that job and we are left with some little refuse to clear," he said.

The spokesman said TMA has temporarily relocated the refuse container back to its former place near the lorry park and is looking for a permanent place.
