Accra July 2, GNA - Zuleka Jennifer, wife of Mr. Steven Asamoah Boateng, former Information and National Orientation Minister, appeared before an Accra Circuit Court on Thursday charged with assault of a public officer.
Zuleika was also charged for using insulting language on a public officer and rescuing goods or things from a public officer. She pleaded not guilty.
Zuleka is said to have assaulted Nana Kwame Osei, a security officer and insulted him to wit "Nkwaseafo," Idiots, "Jungle Boys," "Low Class Boys," and snatched a passport from him. The court presided over Mrs. Adwoa Coleman admitted her to bail in the sum of GHC 50,000 cedis with sureties to reappear on July 9. Representing her, Mr. Peter Okudjeto, who held brief for Nene Amegatcher, prayed the court to admit Zuleka to bail because she would be available to prove her case. According to him Zuleka's action was based on the fact that she did not know those she was dealing with. With her at the court were Mr. Asamoah Boateng and other family members. Zuleka's court appearance also fetched New Patriotic Party faithfuls like Mr. Akwasi Osei Adjei, ex-Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Felix Owusu Adjapong, former Majority Leader in Parliament, Mrs. Cecilia Abena Dapaah, former Deputy Minister of Works and Housing, Mr. Albert Kan Dapaah, former Energy Minister. As Zuleka adorned in a black and white fabric descended from the courtroom to the Court's registry to execute her bail bond, relations rushed and marched along with her to the office. The facts as presented by Superintendent of Police Mr. Achigchab Boye are that the complainant Nana Kwame Osei and witnesses in the case are public servants and staff of the Bureau of National Investigations stationed at Kotoka International Airport (KIA), while the accused is a Public Relations Officer. He said on June 14, the complainant received instructions from the Greater Accra Regional Director of the BNI that Mr. Asamoah Boateng was going to travel out of the country hence he (Nana Kwame Osei) should prevent him. According to the prosecutor, the complainant was also to inform Mr. Asamoah Boateng about the BNI invitation the following day. Prosecution said on that same day, Mr. Asamoah Boateng was intercepted at KIA in the company of Zuleka and their two children who were going through departure formalities. Zuleka was then, in possession of her children's passport while Mr. Asamoah Boateng was holding his and that of Zuleka, he prosecutor said. They submitted their passports for checks. Prosecution said Zuleka on hearing about the Director of BNI's invitation, snatched her husband's passport and put it into her breast pocket.Mr. Asamoah Boateng pleaded with the complainant to allow him to travel but Nana Kwame Osei declined.
Prosecution said this infuriated Mr. Asamoah Boateng who started shouting and making calls.
Zuleka charged on the complainant by holding the collar of his shirt and forcibly snatched her husband's passport from his pocket.
The prosecution said Zuleka thereafter rained insults on the complainant for which a report was made to the Airport Police, while a medical report was issued to him.
The case was later transferred to the Regional Criminal Investigations Department and on June 17 this year the Police traced the house of the accused at Tantra Hill in Accra but met her absence.
A message was however left for her to report to the Police on June 19, but she reported on June 25 and was arrested.
