A student of Central University College (CUC) was Monday dawn killed when the vehicle he was travelling with got involved in an accident on the Accra-Tema Motorway.

Another person, according to police report, got injured and is currently receiving treatment at the Volta River Authority (VRA) hospital.

The dead has been identified as William Yirenkyi, an architectural student of the institution, while Kelvin Adjetey Sowah, a course mate of William who was driving at the time of the accident, got injured and is receiving treatment.

This adds to four the number of Central University students killed in road crashes within one week. It would be recalled that three of the students on Tuesday, April 26, 2016 died on the spot when their saloon car collided with a tipper truck on the Dawhenya–Aflao highway. They were Sedem Hodo, Nana Kofi Asare and Boison Kobby Junior.

DSP A. O. Akrofi, the commanding officer in-charge of the Airport Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) of the Ghana Police Service, said Monday’s accident involving the two students occurred at a spot close to Kings Cottage and after the police post on the Tema Motorway. The vehicle involved was a Pontiac Vibe with a registration number GM 2939-14 and driven by Kelvin Adjetey Sowah.

The two were returning from Accra to the school when their vehicle got involved in the accident.

According to information gathered, while returning from Accra, Kelvin said they saw somebody crossing the road and to avoid hitting the said person, the driver veered off the road, lost control of the vehicle and it somersaulted several times. Police personnel who were on duty at the post immediately rushed in to save the victims with the help of other passersby.

The two were rushed to the Tema General Hospital for treatment but William Yirenkye was pronounced dead on arrival.

The family of Adjetey later transferred him to the VRA Hospital for more medical treatment.

The body of Yirenkyi has since been deposited at the morgue for preservation.
