He?s on a campaign of vilification VICE PRESIDENT ALIU Mahama and Mr Jake Obetsebi-Lamptey, National Campaign Manager of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), have called off the bluff of ex-President Jerry John Rawlings with vitriolic attacks on his personality.

Whilst Mr Obetsebi-Lamptey reminded Ghanaians of what he said was the theft of state property by former President Rawlings to furnish his room because he could not manage his own affairs, the Vice President also chastised the ex-President embarking on a persistent campaign of vilification against President John Agyekum Kufuor and members of his administration and for accusing them of being corrupt, thieves and other evils.

Speaking at the launch of his party?s manifesto in Accra on Monday, Jake, who also doubles as the Minister of Tourism and Modernisation of the Capital City, also reminded Ghanaians of how the former President could not afford a tin of milk during his days as a service man and resorted to borrowing ?yorke gari? before he could feed his family.

?For almost twenty years Ghanaians endured the insults of this man?, Jake stressed in his well rehearsed extempore speech, saying Rawlings at one time as Head of State referred to Ghanaians as not better than cats.

Charged on by the cheers that greeted his comments from party supporters who had gathered at the International Conference Centre to witness the occasion, he said for Rawlings alone, Ghanaians would have to be beaten before they could do anything.

Paying a courtesy call on the Chief Imam of Wa during a visit to the elders of Limanyiri Vouri, the Zongo Community, Jengbenyiri and the Akan Community in the municipality,

Vice President Mahama said former President Rawlings has extended his campaign of vilification to the international community to destroy the image of the President and the nation.

He said this situation was unfortunate, as President Kufuor had resolved to accord his predecessor all the respect and dignity befitting the status of a statesman.

He said President Kufuor had hopes of assigning the former President the role of a distinguished ambassador to represent Ghana at international events and to mediate in conflicts in the sub-region, but he could no longer be relied upon as he has gone around preaching tribalism and other negative issues that had the tendency to divide Ghanaians and undermine the peace and stability of the nation.

The Vice President urged other political leaders to preach messages that would seek to unite the people and not employ divisive tendencies.

?Party politics is about unity and development and not destruction, division and maligning which impede progress and development?.

Vice President also reiterated his call on politicians to desist from scoring cheap political points with the Dagbon crisis.

He said the Dagbon crisis must be considered a national tragedy, which required the effort of every Ghanaian to restore peace to the area.

It was therefore unfortunate, he said, that some politicians were deepening the crisis by resorting to lies and accusing the NPP administration of masterminding the death of the Dagbon Overlord.

The Vice President said if politicians tried to use the Dagbon crisis to cause a political stir it would backfire as people were now conscious of national issues and could discern the truth from lies and deceit that have the tendency of dividing people.

The Vice President said he was from Yendi and wondered how he or any other person from his party could create problems in Yendi.

Prof Kassim Kasanga, Minister of Science and Environment, Mr Sahanun Mogtari, Upper West Regional Minister, Alhaji Moctari Musah Bamba, Member of Parliament for Wenchi East, Mr Ambrose Dery, a Deputy Minister of Justice and Attorney General accompanied the Vice President.
