Akwatia By-election: NPP candidate in a 'comfortable lead' - Info Analytics poll shows

A poll by research firm, Global Info Analytics, has put the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) in a comfortable lead in the upcoming by-election for Akwatia Constituency in the Eastern Region, slated for September 2, 2025.

According to the poll, the candidate of the NPP, Solomon Asumadu, is leading with nearly 50% of the constituents making assurances to vote for him.

The parliamentary candidate for the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC), Bernard Baidoo, came second with 44% of voters in the constituency indicating their preference for him.

The poll also showed that 6.5% of the constituents indicated they would be voting for different candidates other than Solomon Asumadu and Bernard Baidoo.

More details from the poll showed that Solomon Asumadu, the NPP candidate, was leading in 9 out of the 21 electoral areas in the constituency.

NDC’s Bernard Baidoo according to the polls was leading in 8 of the electoral areas, while there was a tie between Solomon Asumadu and Bernard Baidoo in 4 of the electoral areas.

The Executive Director and Head of Global Research at Global Info Analytics, Mussa Dankwah, who shared excerpts of the poll on X on August 6, 2025, questioned whether the NPP could hold on to its lead.

He pointed out that the NPP was losing in one of its strong electoral areas.

“The battle is on. Can the NPP candidate hold on to his lead till election day or could it be a déjà vu as was in Assin North?

“Will Almighty Apinamang be NPP's Waterloo as NDC candidate leads in an electoral area that has been a no-go area for the NDC since 1992?” he questioned.

The Akwatia seat became vacant following the death of the Member of Parliament, Ernest Yaw Kumi.

Emest Yaw Kumi passed away on July 7, 2025, at the age of 40, after a brief illness.

A first-term MP representing the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kumi won the closely contested December 2024 election against the National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate, Henry Yiadom Boakye, securing 19,269 votes to Boakye's 17,206.

However, his victory was marred by controversy, with the NDC alleging electoral irregularities, leading to a legal battle. A legal challenge against Kumi's victory was pending at the time of his death. His seat was subsequently declared vacant following his passing.
