Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Shippers Authority, Prof Ransford Gyampo has urged the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) to go easy on the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the impending Akwatia constituency by-election.

He pleaded that it would be thoughtful of the NDC to not contest the Akwatia seat which has become vacant following the sudden demise of their MP Ernest Yaw Kumi.

Speaking on TV3's Key Points on July 12, 2025, he appealed to the leaders of the NDC to relax their stance on the NPP in the upcoming by-election in Akwatia constituency.

His remarks were situated in the unfortunate circumstances surrounding the death of the late MP for Akwatia Ernest Yaw Kumi.

"I think the NDC should not press the neck of the NPP too hard going into the Akwatia constituency by-elections. The manner in which they lost the former MP is rather unfortunate. I think they should go easy on them, Possibly, they should even stay away from contesting the seat," Prof Gyampo said.

However, in a sharp response to his appeal, Majority Chief Whip, Rockson Nelson Dafeamekpo who was also a panelist on the show rejected the call.

He asserted that the NPP given a similar situation would not relent to go the full haul, hence, the NDC would not hold back in contesting the Akwatia seat.

Ernest Yaw Kumi, the NPP MP for Akwatia, passed away on July 7, 2025, after a short illness.
