Former Member of Parliament for Anyaa-Sowutuom, Dr Dickson Adomako Kissi, has issued a stark challenge to the Inspector-General of Police, COP Christian Tetteh Yohunu.
Dr Adomako Kissi asserts that the IGP must either guarantee a peaceful and credible by-election in Akwatia or resign from his position if security in the constituency cannot be ensured.
Speaking on GHOne TV’s GHToday show on Monday, July 28, Adomako Kissi expressed disappointment over the Ghana Police Service’s handling of the recent rerun of the Ablekuma North constituency election, describing it as a failure that must not be repeated.
“Should he fail this time, I think he needs to prepare his resignation letter,” he said.
According to him, some individuals exploited the Ablekuma North election to incite violence and chaos.
He insisted that such elements must be identified and swiftly removed if they attempt to infiltrate the Akwatia polls.
The former MP expressed hope that security deployment in Akwatia would exclude officers who were at post at the Ablekuma North when the incidents happened.
He called for the use of “well-trained and capable” officers who can act professionally and resist political pressure.
“We want to see police officers who cannot be walked over—officers who will protect the sanctity of the process,” he stated.
Dr Adomako Kissi also cautioned against voter intimidation and suppression.
He called for the immediate action on individuals seen wearing unauthorised party regalia or inciting tension during the electoral process.
He reminded the IGP that his authority is rooted in Ghana’s democratic framework and urged him to uphold the integrity of the elections.
“The IGP must remember that we are in a democracy that gives him his authority. He owes it to Ghana to protect the sanctity of our elections,” he added.
The NPP has nominated Solomon Kwame Asumadu as its candidate, while the NDC is set to hold its parliamentary primaries on August 4 to select a representative from among three aspirants.
