Former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has been appointed to lead an election observation mission to the Republic of Benin by the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).
According to a statement from his office dated Tuesday, March 31, 2026, the former president will head the ECOWAS Election Observation Mission (EOM) for the upcoming presidential election in Benin, scheduled for April 12, 2026.

“The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has appointed Ghana's former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo as Head of its Election Observation Mission (EOM) to the forthcoming presidential election in the Republic of Benin, scheduled for 12th April, 2026,” portions of the statement read.
The statement explained that Akufo-Addo will lead a diverse team made up of experts from across ECOWAS member states.
It noted that the delegation will include diplomats, electoral specialists, representatives from national electoral bodies, members of the ECOWAS Parliament and Council of the Wise, as well as officials from the ECOWAS Court of Justice.
“President Akufo-Addo will lead a carefully balanced and multidisciplinary delegation drawn from across Member States and made up of diplomats, electoral experts, representatives of national electoral commissions, members of the ECOWAS Parliament and the Council of the Wise, as well as officials from the ECOWAS Court of Justice,” it noted.
The release further indicated that the mission is designed to ensure a balanced and professional observation of the electoral process in Benin.
It added that the team will bring together experienced individuals from different sectors to support credible and transparent elections.

Per the statement, the former president is expected to arrive in Cotonou on April 8, 2026, ahead of the polls, and will return to Accra on April 15, 2026, after the exercise.
