President Nana Akufo-Addo has been widely criticized for not wearing the Ghana@60 anniversary cloth to the Independence Day Parade.

Former presidents JJ Rawlings and John Dramani Mahama graced the occasion in their anniversary cloth and some Ghanaians have quizzed why the current president failed to do same as a sign of encouraging citizens to patronise the cloth.

But an explanation has been given by the spokesperson for the celebration, Jefferson Sackey.

In an interview with Accra based Adom FM, he said said the President first wore the anniversary cloth when he attended the premiering of the Independence struggle documentary and therefore his decision to wear the smock was not deliberate.

“President Akufo-Addo’s decision not to wear the Ghana@60 cloth was not deliberate. The anniversary is a year-long celebration and not a one day event and I know that subsequently, our President would definitely be in the Ghana@60 cloth for all to see."

“Even when former President Nkrumah was declaring Ghana as an independent country, he wore a traditional smock just to show how Ghanaian he was.’’
