Akufo-Addo’s commitment to sustaining health sector abysmal – Ofosu Kwakye

Former Deputy Communication Minister in the erstwhile Mahama administration, Felix Ofosu Kwakye is unconvinced with explanations given by the Health Minister with regards to President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s investments in the health sector.

According to Mr Ofosu Kwakye, though the Akufo-Addo-led government through the Health Minister has given reasons as to why some projects have stalled, the excuses are so far untenable.

He said the Akufo-Addo government has not shown enough commitment to the health sector as expected in the over 3 years they have been in office.

At a press briefing, Tuesday, April 28, 2020, the Health Minister, Kwaku Agyemang Manu emphasized without hesitation that his government since assumption of office has never abandoned any health project, neither has it paid lesser attention to the health sector. He went on to recount the numerous health projects which have since been operationalized or under construction.

He said, “Government after assuming office on the 7th of January 2017 has never abandoned any health facility that was started by the previous government.”

But Ofosu Kwakye maintains that the minister’s argument is not justifiable as the government’s failure to invest in the health sector has come back to bite Ghanaians in this period of global crisis.

“…The real reason we are having this discussion is that the Akufo-Addo government can easily be unwilling to either operationalize or complete projects that he inherited. The fact remains that President Akufo-Addo has not shown enough commitment to investing capital in the health sector and even when they are presented with an opportunity to open up completed projects, they have failed and left Ghanaians in dire need…You will notice there is a lot of scepticism and that scepticism stems from the President’s own abysmal record in completion of hospitals,” he argued in an interview on Eyewitness News.
