Akufo-Addo’s Desperation, A Recipe For Disaster

CSIS Reveals & Says Election 2012 Could Be Chaotic

News Desk Report

It has never been in doubt that Mr. Williams Addo-Dankwa Akufo-Addo and his opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) is hell-bent in plunging this country into flames if the election in 2012 does not go in their favour, but recently-released report by Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS), a United States based bi-partisan, non-profit organization headquartered in Washington, DC, confirms it all.

The David W. Throup’s (founder of CSIS) twenty six (26)-paged report which tries to assess how possibly Ghana stands the risk of becoming unstable, even though she has emerged as a epitome of stability and good governance, the rule of law respected and the last but not the least, democratic norms well entrenched, tipped Akufo-Addo highly as the man to wreck Ghana.

Though the CSIS findings dwells on areas, notably, Social and Macroeconomic Impact of Oil, The Impact of Drug Money and that of Youth Unemployment and Migration from the North, their main emphasis was on the 2012 elections. According to the report, Ghana had a lucky escape during the last presidential election in December 2008 with the razor-thin failure of the NPP candidate, Nana Akufo-Addo, the report observes, to win the presidency on the first ballot (he missed out by less than 8,000 votes) briefly tempted the NPP to hang on to power and challenge the official results.

This attempt by the NPP at the time which could have plunged this nation into bedlam was saved by former president John Agyekum Kufuor, when he called on party supporters to accept the need for second round, hours following the election, the report indicated. Again, president Kufuor then also did same when President John Evans Atta Mills was announced the winner in the second round, as he urged the NPP to accept the result since he wanted to hand over power in peace.

CSIS indicated also in its report that, the 2012 election campaign is likely to be far more confrontational and potentially violent, given the stakes involved and particularly now that the NPP has been taken over by Akufo-Addo and his group, Kufuor is unlikely to be able to exert a moderating influence as far as this year’s election is concerned.

According to the organization’s findings, the above-stated scenarios and earlier utterances by the NPP flagbearer in respect of the upcoming December 7 general election was enough indication of Ghana becoming unstable, when the results did not go in his favour as a result of how desperate he has become and wants to win power at all cost.

“The role of the NPP leader and expected presidential candidate, Nana Akufo-Addo, will be crucial, and an early signal suggests reasons for worry. Akufo-Addo is desperate to mobilize support, and he has played the ethnic card, referring to the NPP as “We Akans”, urging his supporters to “all die be die” –that is, they should be willing to die to ensure the NPP victory”, the report pointed out.

It would be recalled that the NPP flagbearer in his desperation to become the president of this country in a meeting with party executives in the Eastern Region months ago, incited Akans against other tribes and energized them with his “all die be die” mantra.

As if this irresponsible statement from the NPP leader was not enough, the “certificateless” National Chairman of this same party claimed that Akans are good ambassadors for war and says the recent impasse in Ivory Coast was fought by the Akans.

Those of us at The Informer are not surprised about the intentions of the NPP as regards their defeat in this year’s election, but the CSIS report coming at this crucial moment, we think will help Ghanaians to make an informed decision and not vote for the NPP when they are known internationally as nation wreckers. Readers should stay tuned for more juicy updates regarding the CSIS report on the NPP and its leader.
