President of Ghana, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo President of Ghana, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo

Ato Ahwoi has cautioned the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to play it fair or risk prosecutions and possible jail terms if the NDC wins the 2020 polls.

According to Mr. Ahwoi the NDC have observed how the Akufo-Addo-led government is using state security agencies to persecute some key members of their party A kingpin of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Ato Ahwoi, has warned the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) to be fair when prosecuting its members or risk facing same treatments when the NDC returns to power.

Mr. Ahoi believes the NPP government has intentionally targeted some persons in the NDC since assuming office. He said the NDC will mete out the same treatment to NPP lynchpins should be party return to power in 2020.

“Nana Akufo-Addo and his men should be prepared to be paid back in their own coin when the NDC wins power in the 2020 general elections,” he said in an interview with Power FM.

“Whatever the NPP does, we will win the elections in 2020, but when we win, we will do more than what they are doing to us.” Mr. Ahoi’s comments were in relation to the arrest and subsequent prosecution of the NDC’s National Chairman, Samuel Ofosu Ampofo.

He said the NDC had observed how the Akufo-Addo government is using state security agencies to persecute some key members of the main opposition party in the country.

“We can do even worse than what they are doing,” Mr. Ahoi retorted, adding that the NPP government is only using such tactics “to divert attention from the hardships and the lies of the government.”

The NDC’s National Chairman, Mr. Ampofo, has been under fire in the last few days after an audio attributed to him leaked in the media. The content of the leaked tape has drawn widespread criticism from a section of the public, with many condemning the NDC Chairman.

In the audio, he is heard saying many things, including urging verbal attacks on the Chairperson of the Electoral Commission, Jean Mensa.

Mr. Ampofo is also heard saying that party communicators are free to insult the Peace Council Chairman, Professor Emmanuel Asante.

The NDC Chairman is currently facing four charges after being interrogated at the CID Headquarters.
