Akuapim North District Gets Science Resource Centre

Akropong-Akwapim, 7 Oct.,

A science resource centre to cater for second-cycle schools in the Akuapem North District has been commissioned at the Okuapeman Secondary School, Akropong-Akuapem, as part of the government's programme to provide such centres in all the 110 districts in the country. The centre, to cater for eleven senior secondary schools and the Presbyterian Training College at Akropong, was built at a cost of 76 million cedis with the Akuapem North District Assembly contributing 48 million cedis. In a speech, the District Chief Executive, Mr. Anthony Gyampoh, urged both teachers and students in the district to use the facility wisely to justify the government's huge investment on education. He urged girls from the area to take advantage of the centre to offer Science subjects. Mr. Gyampoh announced that the district assembly, which allocated about 260 million cedis of its share of the common fund for the provision of educational facilities last year, had increased it to 301 million cedis this year. The Eastern Regional Director of Education, Mr. Robert Ajene, said the government's policy of establishing Science Resource Centres in all the districts is to ensure that the scientific and technological development of the country's human resources is in line with the Vision 2020 programme. He asked teachers and students to take good care of the equipment at the centre. The headmaster of the school, Mr. Yaw Asante, called on the management committee of the centre and his colleagues to pool resources to maintain the centre.
