Confusion surrounding Monday afternoon’s fatal aircraft crash at Tema Community One has been addressed after the Deputy Minister of Defence, Ernest Yaw Brogya Genfi, confirmed that the aircraft involved does not belong to the Ghana Armed Forces.
Earlier reports and social media claims had suggested that a military helicopter had crashed in the area, sparking widespread concern among residents and the public. However, the Defence Ministry has now clarified that the aircraft was a privately owned microlight.
In a statement posted on his Facebook page shortly after the incident, the deputy minister wrote:
“We have received reports of a fatal crash involving a privately owned microlight aircraft at Tema Community 1 this afternoon. We wish to clarify that the aircraft is not owned by the Ghana Armed Forces.”

He, however, extended his condolences to the affected families.
“We pray for the souls of the departed and extend our deepest condolences to the bereaved families,” the statement read.
The aircraft reportedly went down on Monday afternoon within the vicinity of Tema Community One, drawing the attention of residents and emergency responders. Eyewitnesses said the crash occurred around 3:30 p.m., triggering panic in the community as smoke and debris were seen at the scene.
Emergency personnel, including officers from the Ghana National Fire Service, quickly moved in to secure the area and assist with rescue and recovery efforts. Initial reports indicated that two bodies had been retrieved from the crash site.
Authorities also evacuated teachers and pupils from a nearby school as a precaution while the scene was cordoned off to allow investigators to assess what led to the crash.
Investigations are ongoing, with officials expected to release further details about the victims and the circumstances surrounding the accident.
