Agric Minister terminates two contracts for delays

The Minister of Food and Agriculture, Mr. Kwasi Ahwoi, on Monday terminated the contracts of two contractors who failed to meet deadlines on feeder roads projects awarded to them by the Northern Rural Growth Programme (NRGP) under the ministry.

Adams Mahama and MAICO Ghana Limited were among 10 other contractors who were awarded 154 kilometres of feeder roads in the Northern, Upper East and Upper West regions in April 2011 and were expected to complete work by April 2012.

The MAICO Ghana Limited was awarded a 14-km feeder road from Nasia to Mimima and Mognori to Kpelumbu (19.9km), while Adams Mahama is constructing Siroo-Vieri 12km and Tilli-Widnaba 13.00km; but no activity has been on site.

Mr. Ahwoi expressed disappointed at the contractors who he said failed to meet the project’s deadline even after two months had elapsed aside the April deadline.

He said the Africa Development Bank was ready to assist the country with a lot of money to undertake development projects but the negative attitude of contractors was not helping matters, adding that the termination of those contracts would serve as a warning to other contractors.

Mr. Ahwoi said the feeder roads were part of a bigger project under the Savannah Accelerated Development Authority (SADA), and added that the contracts would be repackaged and re-awarded.**
