Aggrieved mine workers demonstrate against Goldfields amidst gun shots

Aggrieved mine workers of Goldfields Ghana Limited have hit the street leading to the main access of Tarkwa mine in a surprise demonstration against the company for treating them unfairly.

The workers have in the process blocked all roads leading to the company, thereby, preventing staff who are on duty from going to work.

The situation has also affected staff who worked the previous night from having access to the company’s numerous buses to convey them to their various homes.

Our sources say there is heavy police and military presence at the scene to avert any eventuality.

According to our sources, the aggrieved mine workers planned to stage the demonstration on Tuesday, March 13, 2018.

It is however not clear what informed them to cut short their plans to stage the demonstration on Monday, March 12, 2018.

Eye witnesses say the mine workers have become so aggressive to the extent that the security personnel are finding it very difficult to control them.

Both the military and police have, however, resorted to the firing of gunshots in an attempt to put some fear in the aggrieved mine workers who have besieged the entrance of the company.

Sources say affected retrenched workers have started receiving their severance packages from the company with the exercise expected to be completed on March 24, 2018.

But the packages, our sources add, is too small, hence, the demonstration against the company.

Besides those affected, thus workers in HME and Mining departments, the company intends to shift its focus to other departments and lay more workers off.

Those who are afraid of losing their jobs in the upcoming exercise, have also joined in the demonstration exercise.
