Fifty-Two (52) persons with various forms of disability who have been supported with items to enable them to generate income in order to fend for their families in the Sagnarigu Municipality of the Northern Region have been warned against returning to the streets and begging for alms.

“Beneficiaries who are found on the streets begging for alms after receiving these income-generating items will be denied access to the fund next quarter”, The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) Hon. Iddrisu Mariam warned.

The beneficiaries received brand new refrigerators, deep freezers, sewing machines, corn mills, metal containers, Plasma TV with DSTV decoders and accessories, shoe-making tools, soft drinks, plastics, bags of maize, boxes of key soaps, gallons of oil to enable them to start their own businesses.

Forty-two (42) others who are pursuing their tertiary education in various institutions throughout the country had their fees to the tune of GH? 27,386.98 paid while 6 were also supported with GH? 9,100 on their health ground among others.

She revealed that the items were meant to keep them in business reason they were not given physical cash to lavish on their families to detriment of their well-being sounding a word of caution to them to engage in what she termed as a lucrative business rather than resort to begging on the streets with its associated risks.

“Instead of handing out cash to the beneficiaries which they usually exhaust in no time, it was better to ensure that the money was used to secure sources of living with their consent. In compliance with this directive, therefore, the Assembly decided to use the funds to set them up small business ventures which would help improve their economic status instead of taking the cash”, she revealed

According to her, plans are in the offing to set more PWDs up to stop the practice of some of them engaging in begging on the streets as has always been the case.

The MCE urged beneficiaries to use the items for the intended purpose for their own good indicating that those who well will be rewarded by the assembly by getting more support in the next quarter.
