African leaders commended for accepting Peer Review Mechanism

The African Peer Review Oversight Committee of the Gomoa West District has commended the continent's Heads of State for embracing the mechanism which aims at ensuring good governance. In a message to commemorate African Union Day, which falls on May 25, Mr Mark Nii Lamptey, chairman of the oversight committee, appealed to the Heads of State to initiate youth friendly policies. The message urged them to make job creation their priority to prevent the youth from embarking on dangerous journeys to seek greener pastures outside the continent.

"The way the youth are leaving their countries to other continents must be a concern for their leaders," the message stated. The committee urged the leaders to ensure accountability at the grassroots, especially with the heads of family clans, chiefs and district heads.

The message cautioned African leaders against over dependence on donor countries for everything, including food handouts. "Our people must not be given food always but must be taught how to produce food."

The message appealed to the Peer Review Governing Council to speed up action to inaugurate all oversight committees to empower them to contribute to good governance.
