Africa Must Matter - Burna Boy’s inspiring BET Awards acceptance speech

The 20th annual BET Awards was marked with uniqueness. Due to the Coronavirus pandemic, the Awards was held virtually, this meant no red carpet glamour.
Artists, however, were challenged to go beyond their comfort to bring the best in terms of performances.

The category which was of interest to us all was the Best International Act category. This had the likes of Innoss’B from DRC, South African singer Sho Madjozi, U.K. acts Dave & Stormzy, and France’s Ninho & S.Pri Noir.

British supermodel, Naomi Campbell presented “The Best International Act” award to the Grammy-nominated singer Burna Boy.

Burna boy delivered another powerful message. in his acceptance speech he said,

“I’ll like to use this opportunity to say that sometime around 1835, there was a mission to turn Africa into a dominated nation. Now is the time to overturn that and go back to the royalty that we were, because, in order for black lives to matter, Africa must matter.”
