Afenyo-Markin reports to CID to assist police in alleged assault probe

Minority Leader in Parliament, Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin, has reported to the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service to assist in the investigation of an alleged assault involving him and a police officer during the recent “Save the Judiciary” Demonstration.

According to a statement from the Ghana Police Service, his appearance follows an official request made to the Rt. Hon. Speaker of Parliament to release him to assist in the investigation.

The police noted that Afenyo-Markin’s cooperation is part of ongoing efforts to clarify the circumstances surrounding the clash between him (Afenyo-Markin) and a police officer during the protest on Monday, May 5, 2025.

Additionally, the police revealed that a separate investigation has commenced following a formal petition submitted by Afenyo-Markin himself, in which he alleges he was assaulted by the officer involved.

“Both investigations are ongoing and the public will be updated as the case progresses,” the statement read.

Background

The Minority Leader and Member of Parliament for Effutu, Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin, was captured on video in a visibly agitated state, directing his anger toward one of the police security personnel during the #SaveTheJudiciary Demonstration held on Monday, May 5, 2025.

In the viral video sighted by GhanaWeb, the footage showed the lawmaker angrily addressing the officers while standing behind the barricades.

He was then captured knocking the head of the police officer in the video, escalating the confrontation.
