Mr Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin, Member of Parliament (MP) for Effutu Constituency, has donated 150 sewing machines and 15 hair-dryers to young ladies who have learnt such vocation to enable them to earn a living.

The donation formed part of the MP’s social responsibilities to his constituents and in line with the government’s promise of creating jobs.

Making the presentation at a ceremony in Winneba, Mr Afenyo-Markin said since he was given the mandate to represent the people of the area in Parliament some five years ago, he had presented over four thousand sewing machines and hair-dryers to youths who have learnt dressmaking and hairdressing.

Additionally, he gave 50 taxies to drivers in the constituency to engage in ‘work and pay’.

Mr Afenyo Markin said entrepreneurship through innovation significantly improved the standard of living of people, noting that vocational training was one of the key pillars of his leadership in the Effutu Constituency.

He said creation of jobs was not about placing people in the formal sector, but helping people to develop their skills and talents to create and establish their own enterprises.

“This I believe is the number one major step I have taken to help in addressing unemployment and also to take the young ladies off the streets”.

He gave the assurance to sponsor the training of youth in the area to learn a vocation and equip them with the necessary start up kits “and I am optimistic that this initiative has hard significant impact on the lives of beneficiaries.”

The MP advised the beneficiaries to take good care of the machines and work judiciously in order to become independent entrepreneurs in society.
