Adu-Boahene Trial: Prosecution witness making serious admissions – Atta Akyea

Samuel Atta Akyea, Lawyer for former National Signals Bureau (NSB) Director General, Kwabena Adu-Boahene, says testimony by a prosecution witness in the ongoing trial is making what he described as “serious admissions” regarding national security operations.

His comments follow proceedings at the Accra High Court where the prosecution’s witness, Edith Ruby Opokua Adumuah, Head of Finance at the NSB, testified about how funds were handled for national security operations.

The witness told the court that funds withdrawn from the bank were used to support operational activities of national security, confirming during cross-examination that such monies were not diverted for personal use.

Reacting to the testimony after the court sitting in a video shared by JoyNews on March 17, 2026, Samuel Atta Akyea suggested that the disclosures made by the prosecution witness could strengthen the defence’s case.

“Serious admissions are being made relating to pre-financing of serious national security undertakings. So, therefore, if there's a need to refund …we should go into the accounts, then why are we in the court. I think some foundations are being laid and we'll use it in good time,” he said.

The defence lawyer further indicated that the evidence being presented in court originates from the prosecution’s own records and documents.

“Obviously, these are their own documents. They are not our inventions so, that if their own documents are messing up their case, we'll see how it goes. A lot more will be revealed. We'll see how this case proceeds,” he stated.

According to him, issues relating to national security operations have surfaced during the trial largely due to disclosures made by the prosecutor.

“Here we are, national security is our trial and why are we delving into national security matters? If we are not careful, we are going to blame a lawyer for bringing out certain issues but all the matters you are trying to dilate on were disclosures from the prosecution. The prosecution has disclosed national security matters so, how can we say we will not comment on them?” he added.

Kwabena Adu-Boahene, together with other accused persons, is standing trial over allegations including stealing, money laundering and causing financial loss to the state involving about GH¢49.1 million.

All accused persons have pleaded not guilty to the charges and remain on bail as the trial continues.
