Adopt investment habits – Dr. Apotey to NABCO trainees

Chief Operating Officer for the Upper Manya Kro Rural Bank Limited, Dr. Gabriel Odeh Apotey has urged NABCO trainees to adopt the habit of investment as a safe guarantee towards their future.

Dr. Apotey who was speaking to NABCO personnel during the first anniversary celebrations of the programme identified the various types of investment which in his advice said the youth should consider adopting in order to secure their future.

The event held at the Somanya Ebenezer Presbyterian church was under the theme, “investing in the youth, securing our future through work opportunities and nation building.”

He said sacrificing to invest one’s resources in any of the investment types including, property (Estate) Investment, Portfolio Investment, Spiritual Investment, Educational Investment and Social Investment, was the surest means towards ensuring a financially secured future.

“Instead of you doing things which would be of a disadvantage for you today, hold on those things, kill yourself, the opportunity cost of tomorrow is for you to lose today,” said Dr. Apotey. “So lose today and get tomorrow.”

To secure one’s destiny, the Chief Operating Officer also urged the personnel to guard against envy, one’s choice of religion, choice of relationships, the choice of number of children and one’s choice of education.

While averaging the total working years of an individual at thirty-five years, Dr. Apotey advised young people to properly plan their families depending on their income level as this would prevent unnecessarily creating a burden for society in the future.

He also advised the trainees to cultivate a gradual habit of savings and investment of the little they earn.

Dr Apotey emphasized that Rural Banking has come to stay and that all must make it a lifestyle to save and buy shares in any Rural Bank nearby especially Upper Manya Kro Rural Bank Limited.

NABCO coordinator for Yilo Krobo, Augustine Teye Nuertey lauded the President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akuffo Addo for the NABCO initiative which he said had created employment opportunities for the Ghanaian youth including Yilo Krobo.

Explaining why some trainees are no more part of the NABCO scheme, Mr Teye Nuertey cited double engagement on government initiatives, Government of Ghana permanent job opportunities and outcome of monitoring as some of factors responsible for the development.

On his part, Mr. Lawrence Asare Dankwa of the Somanya office of the Ghana Revenue Authority also admonished the trainees to indoctrinate the essence of time management in their day to day activities.

Mr. Asare Dankwa who extolled the values of time consciousness described the abuse of time by the youth as unacceptable.

“The youth of today are not time conscious, they are late in everything. They are late to church, they are late to work, they are even late to their own weddings,” Mr. Asare Dankwa noted.

According to him, no country can develop without time management and thereby urged young people such as NABCO employees to be time conscious to ensure the development of the country.

He called for counselling to guide students to make sound educational choices as well as loyalty, competence (talent), commitment, information handling and productivity as against entertainment/Fashion, extent of solicitation (bribery), morality and patriotism to establish a good working relationship with one’s employer.

The Upper Manya Kro Rural Bank Limited also donated Ghc 500 as its support towards the anniversary celebrations of the programme.

Lower Manya celebrations

Coordinator of the NABCO programme at Lower Manya Krobo, Raymond Asare Partey while congratulating personnel who had gained the necessary skills offered by the programme however urged personnel who were yet to acquire the skills to “change their place of work to acquire what the initiative is all about.”

Out of the 375 NABCO trainees received in 2018, the number has reduced to 276, a development Mr. Asare Partey attributes to the permanent employment of ninety-nine of their members in various sectors.

He identified, name mismatch, wrong spelling of names and double registration as some challenges which disrupted the payment of allowances to trainees but added that such challenges had been effectively addressed.
Most trainees who spoke at the event lauded the initiative as a timely intervention.

Activities lined up for the anniversary included clean up exercise, health screening, and blood donation exercise.
