The Adentan Office of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) has organized a social auditing engagement at the Holy Reformed Apostolic Church in the Adentan Municipality.

The engagement chaired by Mr. Nii Annang Thomas from the Traditional Authorities, was held on the theme: “Citizens for Transparency and Accountability”, and sought to promote community ownership of development projects and policies, increase awareness of the operations of local government and empower the citizenry to demand accountability from duty bearers.

In his speech on “Grassroot Participation in Local Governance”, Mr. Alexander Owusu Siaw, a Senior Civic Education Officer of NCCE, pointed that good governance can be better realized when citizens get involved in decision-making process. He remarked that as citizens we are obligated to reduce corruption, promote accountability and effective implementation of developmental projects in compliance with rule of law, when we participate in policy making at the local level.

At the programme, the Municipal Chief Executive of Adentan Municipality, Hon. Daniel A. Nii Noi Adumuah, commended the NCCE for such initiative programmes to promote good governance and democracy. On the theme, he mentioned that the Assembly has provided active platforms to engage the citizenry to participate in local government and decision-making processes, as well as avenues to promote transparency and accountability.

These he highlighted as Community meetings, Town Hall meetings, Public Relations and Complains Committee (PRCC), AdMA website: www.adma.gov.gh, Adentan News Paper, and the Client Service Unit at the Adentan Municipal Office.

Hon. Nii Noi Adumuah added that he believed leadership is about involving the community in planning and execution of activities that will make the citizenry feel better in society. He outlined projects implemented and plans underway for development in Adentan Manmomo.

The Commander of Police in the Adentan District, Superintendent Samuel Odame pointed that most Ghanaians do not take security issues serious at all. He said even though they are busy acquiring wealth, they have no time to protect their wealth. He advised the citizenry light up dark areas and weed bushes around their vicinities to deter criminals from lurking in such places to commit crime.

Supt. Odame also advised citizens to desist from raising false alarms, as criminals thrive on them to act unlawfully.

According to him, citizens should report crime to the Police and stop pleading for the release of relations who have committed crime, because when such culprits are released most of them commit worse crime knowing that their relations will plead for their release again.

The engagement platform was used by participants to seek redress on peculiar developmental issues in the community from office bearers present.

A five (5) member committee led by the Assembly member of Adentan Manmomo, Hon. Emmanuel Sackey, was formed at the end of the function to do a follow up on the implementation plan to address the topmost priority need of the community out of the issues raised.
