Acute water shortage hits Kumasi metropolis and environs

Kumasi,(Ashanti Region) 14, Oct. An acute water shortage has hit the Kumasi metropolitan area for the past three days, affecting most industrial establishments.

The problem has been attributed to the supply of low voltage of electric power to the Barekese and Owabi headworks of the Ghana Water and Sewerage Corporation (GWSC). Mr Isaac Nyantakyi, area manager of Volta River Authority (VRA) in Kumasi, told the GNA that the VRA had some problems with their transmission lines to the Ashanti region hence the low voltage.

He said technicians of the VRA are working around the problem and hoped the voltage will be normalised today to restore normal water supply to the metropolis.

Mr E. K. Garbrah, Ashanti regional engineer of the GWSC, said the corporation has had a problem of low voltage for sometime now resulting in the water shortage.

He said the GWSC has been supplying water to "sensitive areas" like Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital(KATH), the polyclinics, prisons and the abattoir. GRi
