Acquaint yourselves with constitution, students urged - Minister

Mr Salifu Saeed, the Northern Regional Minister, called on students to make a critical introspection in all their activities and ensure that the right things are done to help in the nation-building process.

“Ghana has chosen the path of democracy and the progress of our democracy depends on our knowledge and the practice of democracy, which emanates from the Constitution”, he said.

Mr Saeed was addressing students at the Inter-University Quiz competition for the Northern Zone in Tamale.

Participants at the event came from the Upper East, Upper West, and the Northern Regions.

The National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) organized the quiz competition which was aimed at encouraging the youth to acquaint themselves with the provisions contained in the 1992 Constitution of Ghana.

Mr Saeed said the youth are the future leaders of the country adding that, “You are those to assume the helm of affairs of the country in future and the process to take leadership positions must begin now through critical thinking”.

He appealed to the NCCE to organize similar and regular events in the region on peace and unity to also inculcate the sense of patriotism in the citizenry and the need to sustain peace for development.

Mr Saeed said the competition formed part of NCCE initiative with support from President Nana Addo Dankwa Akuffo-Addo, who in his inaugural address, called on citizens to be active participants in the governance process.

The Tamale and Wa campuses of the University for Development Studies (UDS) competed with the Bolgatanga Polytechnic in the competition with UDS-Tamale emerging winners with 391 points, whiles UDS-Wa came second with 210 and Bolgatanga Polytechnic obtained 190 points to remain at the bottom.

Alhaji Abdul Razak Saani, the Northern Regional Director of the NCCE, said the Constitution is the supreme law of the country and student must be encouraged to study it.

He said it is necessary to create awareness on the need for students to know the provisions enshrined in the Constitution and this should be a collective effort for every institution in the country to foster national unity and coercion.
