Achimota Hospital has confirmed seven cholera cases from January to June, this year without fatalities.

Out of 17 suspected cases reported at the hospital only seven were confirmed through a rapid diagnostic test.

Mr Michael Alexander Garr, Disease Control Officer at the hospital told Ghana News Agency (GNA), in an interview in Accra on Thursday that the facility is prepared for any major outbreak of the disease.

He said Mrs Elizabeth Sackey, Member of Parliament for Okaikoi North, has provided the medical facility with a cholera bay.

Mr Garr said the hospital has lined up a number of outreach programmes to create public awareness about the disease.

“Patients who report at the out-patient department, maternity ward and reproductive and child health unit are also educated about cholera,” he said.

Mr Atindaana N. Nsobilla, Administrator at the hospital, advised the public to take good care of their health and environment to avoid getting sick from cholera, which overwhelms the hospital.

In a related development, Dr Baba Ibrahim, a medical officer at the Shukura Community Hospital in Accra told the GNA that 30 suspected cholera cases have been confirmed by tests conducted at Mamprobi Poly Clinic (MPC).

“An average of 30 people from January to June, have been suspected with cholera and recently, one person whose samples was taken to the MPC laboratory tested negative but passed on.”

He added that the diagnosis by a laboratory jack, which conducts rapid evaluation of cholera cases, confirmed the disease.

Dr Ibrahim said people suspected with cholera cases have been provided with temporal structures where they receive treatment.

He said as part of the state of preparedness for the hospital to bring the disease under control, the medical personnel are carrying out outreach programmes in the communities.
