Accra Workers To Embark On "Aluta"

The Greater Accra Regional branch of the Trades Union Congress (TUC) will embark on a demonstration on Tuesday, in protest against the government’s announcement of the minimum wage last Friday, when the Tripartite committee meeting had not been concluded.
About 3,000 workers are expected to take part in the demonstration which is expected to last for four hours. Meanwhile, the Tema District Council of Labour (TDCL) will hold an emergency meeting on Wednesday to receive briefing on the Tripartite Committee meeting.
The Chairman of the Council, Wilson Agama says the workers will be able to express their views on the 9,000 cedis minimum wage announced by Finance Minister, Yaw Osafo Maafo after the meeting. "It is only after we have been well briefed that workers will also know the strategy to adopt in reaction to the government's announcement."
The Tema workers demanded 100 percent increase in minimum wage with effect from January, this year, citing the near 100% increase in fuel prices. But the new wage according to Mr Agama represents a 27 per cent increase.
The TUC has condemned government’s announcement of the minimum wage when negotiations had not been completed. TUC Secretary General, Kwesi Adu Amankwah told JOY FM over the weekend that the TUC will announce its next line of action this week.
