Accra, March 10, GNA - Three persons were killed in an accident on Tuesday when a Man Diesel truck hit a passenger bus and fell into a trench at Pokuase in the Ga West District.
Six passengers in the bus including a pregnant woman sustained injuries and are receiving treatment at the Police and Ridge Hospitals in Accra.
DSP Steven Kwebi, Amasaman District Police Commander, told journalists that the accident which occurred around 0730 hours at the Delali Spot opposite Festus Hotel on the Nsawam-Accra road, involved the truck loaded with lumber and a 40-seater Yutong bus embossed with a sticker of Intercontinental Bank.
He said according to information received by the Police, the bus with registration number GC 5II7 Z, which was travelling from Kumasi to Accra parked at the spot to allow passengers to alight. DSP Kwebi said after the passenger had alighted, the bus started moving to join the main road when the truck with registration number GR 7930 N hit its rear and both veered off the road into the trench. He stated that the driver, including two other persons in the truck, died on the spot and their bodies have been deposited at the Police Hospital mortuary.
The deceased persons were identified as Kwame Yeboah, Wayo and Ben. DSP Kwebi said the Police was yet to establish the cause of the accident.
An eyewitness, Mr Ebenezer Kwei, who also spoke to Ghana News Agency attributed the cause to lack of vigilance on the part of the bus driver. According to him, the driver should have allowed the truck driver to pass before driving into the road.
He said a young boy who was standing at the spot when the accident occurred was also killed and was taken away by residents before the Police arrived.
Mr Moses Adotey, Chairman of the Pokuase West Residents Association, expressed worry about the increasing number of accidents on the road.
"There is not a single day that we would not see either a car knocking someone or crashing on this Pokuase road," he added. He said all attempts by the residents to get the Ghana Highway Authority (GHA) to erect speed ramps have failed and added that the only intervention by the GHA was to erect a traffic light which was not even functioning at the moment.
"We, the residents would advice ourselves if the authorities continue to turn deaf ear to our request," Mr Adotey added.
