The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) of the Abuakwa North Municipal Assembly, Charles Darko Yeboah, on Saturday, February 7, 2026, spearheaded the Nationwide Monthly Clean-Up Exercise at the New Tafo Akyem Station, Market, and its surrounding, underlining the government’s commitment to improving sanitation and public health.
The event, held on the first Saturday of February, brought together local leaders, residents, and security personnel to rid the community of waste and promote environmental responsibility.
Speaking at the exercise, MCE Charles Darko Yeboah urged all citizens to take the initiative seriously, warning that non-compliance would have legal repercussions.
"We cannot allow apathy to undermine this critical national effort. Those who refuse to participate or violate the sanitation laws will be arrested and brought before the court," he told Ghanaweb journalist Eric Obeng Boateng.
He emphasized that such measures were necessary to instill a collective sense of duty and ensure Ghana remains a clean and safe nation.
The exercise was conducted in collaboration with the Chief of Tafo, Daasebre Adusei Peasah IV, and the Municipal Police Commander, Chief Superintendent Iddrisu Mahama.
Local assembly members, market women, and residents actively contributed to the clean-up, which focused on removing litter and improving waste management infrastructure in the area.
Traditional Authority Pledges Support for Bigger Mobilization
Daasebre Adusei Peasah IV, after the event, reaffirmed his commitment to the Clean-Up Exercise, pledging to expand community outreach efforts for the next initiative.
"The traditional leadership will intensify door-to-door mobilization to ensure even greater participation next month," he stated.
The Chief highlighted the importance of harmonizing modern governance with traditional authority to achieve sustainable sanitation outcomes.
Strict Enforcement to Ensure Compliance
Municipal Police Commander, Chief Superintendent Iddrisu Mahama, reinforced the need for full public participation, warning of stringent enforcement measures. "No shops will be allowed to operate during the Clean-Up Exercise. Everyone must contribute to keeping our environment clean," he declared. He added that the police would conduct surprise visits to monitor compliance and penalize defaulters.
National Initiative Drives Community Responsibility
The Nationwide Monthly Clean-Up Exercise, a flagship program of the government, is held on the first Saturday of every month. It aims to enhance environmental sanitation, curb public health risks, and foster communal responsibility.
In New Tafo Akyem, the event saw the deployment of teams to clear drains, dispose of waste, and educate residents on hygiene practices.
MCE Darko Yeboah reiterated that the success of the initiative depends on civic consciousness.
"This is not just a government effort; it’s a call to every Ghanaian to take ownership of their environment," he said.
With robust partnerships between local leaders, law enforcement, and the public, the Abuakwa North Municipal Assembly remains a model for nationwide sanitation campaigns.
The next exercise is scheduled for March 7, 2026, with expectations of broader participation and stricter adherence to the newly outlined enforcement protocols.
