About 500 old people go on five-kilometre walk

Accra, September 27, GNA - About five hundred old people in the Greater Accra Region on Saturday, undertook an almost five-kilometre walk to mark International Day for Older People.

All the old people who went on the walk dubbed, "Hand in Hand with the Elderly," from the forecourt of the Stadium to the head office of Helpage Ghana at Osu, were above 60 years old.

The UN declared the Day in 1990 in recognition of the contribution of old people to society and to reflect on issues affecting them. Mr. Ebenezer Adjetey Sorsey, Director of Helpage Ghana, said the organisation observes the Day annually, adding that, activities for this year's celebration include free eye screening and the provision of spectacles for those who would need them.

Mr. Adjetey said Helpage was committed to the welfare of old people and "This time we offer mediation services, which basically involve addressing the plight of older people".

He said it also provides free medical care, relief supply and support a project especially for women who still want to engage in active work.
