The Minority Caucus in Parliament has condemned what it describes as acts of lawlessness and violence that marred the parliamentary rerun election across 19 polling stations in the Ablekuma North Constituency on Friday, July 11, 2025.

In a statement issued on Friday, July 11, 2025, by the Minority Leader, Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin, the Caucus expressed concern over what it described as recurrence of violent disruptions allegedly instigated by thugs affiliated with the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

“Regrettably, senior NDC officials, who should be condemning such actions, are justifying them instead. This undermines democracy and denies the people of Ablekuma North their constitutional rights to parliamentary representation,” the statement read.

The Minority Caucus further accused the Ghana Police Service of complicity, claiming officers stood by passively while the alleged NDC-affiliated thugs carried out violent acts.

"The apparent complicity of the Ghana Police Service, which stood by unconcerned as these party thugs carried out their disruptive and violent acts is particularly egregious given the threats issued by Malike Basintale yesterday at a rally where he openly encouraged their supporters to engage in such conducts.

"Equally reprehensible is the appearance of the Ministers of the Interior and Defence at polling stations. Their presence was nothing more than a public gimmick, designed to feign concern while masking their gross inaction and complicity in the thuggery," it noted.

The Minority Caucus further described the violent acts as part of a broader pattern of violence and electoral irregularities that have plagued Ablekuma North since the disputed December 2024 General Elections.

"These incidents follow a troubling pattern of violence and irregularities that have plagued Ablekuma North since the December 2024 General Elections, including the destruction of electoral materials, missing pink sheets and a fire at the Kwashieman Cluster of Schools," it stated.

The Minority also criticised the Electoral Commission (EC) for deciding to hold a rerun in 19 polling stations, which contradicts earlier claims that only three polling stations were in dispute.

"The Electoral Commission’s (EC) decision to conduct a rerun in 19 polling stations, which we view as inconsistent with earlier assurances that only three polling stations required collation to declare a winner. The sudden shift to a rerun, without adequate explanation, raises suspicions of political interference and undermines public confidence in our electoral institutions", the statement indicated.

It urged the Ghana Police Service to immediately investigate all reported incidents and bring perpetrators to justice.

The Caucus also demanded that the EC restore credibility by ensuring a transparent, inclusive, and timely resolution of the electoral process.

“We call on the NDC to exercise restraint and adhere to the rule of law. The Minority Caucus remains committed to upholding the democratic rights of the people of Ablekuma North,” it added.
