Ablekuma North: NDC has no moral right to talk about Ayawaso or Techiman – Sammi Awuku

Member of Parliament for Akuapem North, Samuel Awuku, has criticised the National Democratic Congress (NDC), stating that the party lacks the moral authority to compare the recent violent clash at Ablekuma North to past incidents at Ayawaso West Wuogon and Techiman South.

His remarks come in response to statements by some NDC members who likened the assault on Minister Hawa Koomson to the violence their own members experienced in previous elections.

Some NDC stalwarts have argued that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) "deserved" the incident at Ablekuma North, suggesting it was a form of retribution for similar occurrences that took place during the NPP’s time in power.

However, reacting to these claims, Sammi Awuku, a former National Youth Organiser of the NPP, maintained that the NDC has no moral justification to reference Ayawaso West Wuogon or Techiman South in the context of the Ablekuma rerun.

In a Facebook post, he wrote, “Yesterday’s electoral violence incident at Ablekuma North is deeply troubling. Politics should never be reduced to chaos, intimidation, or violence. But let me also say this: The NDC, particularly the Mahama-led administration, has no moral right to speak about Ayawaso West Wuogon or Techiman South after yesterday’s happenings.

"You cannot remain silent in the face of misconduct carried out by individuals believed to be aligned with your party, and then attempt to claim the high ground when it suits you. That selective outrage is loud, and it is shameful.”

Awuku also criticised civil society groups for their silence on the incident, expressing disappointment over the lack of public condemnation.

“Equally disappointing is the noisy silence of civil society and advocacy groups, faith-based leaders, and the National Peace Council. Still, we, as the New Patriotic Party (NPP: Development in Freedom), cannot afford to be discouraged or divided.

"Yes, some of us are disappointed. Some of us have questions. But the time to nag should be over. It’s time to rebuild. It’s time to energise the base. It’s time to get back on the ground and reconnect with our people,” he added.
