AVRL introduces new water meters

Accra, Oct. 6, GNA - Mr Andrew Barber, Managing Director of Aqua Vitens Rand Limited (AVRL), on Monday said the company was in the process of introducing new 15ml water meters to capture all flat rate customers into the metering system to ensure fair and equitable distribution of water.

He said additionally the company had also introduced new electronic water meters across its Supply and Treatment Point to be attached to its pumps to monitor exactly on how much water was pumped on a daily basis. Mr Barber made the announcement at the launch of a new Meter and Instruments Workshop on the premises of the AVRL to monitor water supply to ensure that massive economic losses were averted. The workshop would also function as a repair centre for meters as well as replacing existing ones for accurate measurement to meet international standards. About 30,000 meters have been acquired from the Netherlands for the programme. Prof Kwabena Frimpong-Boateng, Chairman of Public Utilities Regulator Commission lauded the company for their commitment to ensure fair and balance in the payment of water bills.

He noted that systemic failure had caused the nation a lot in terms of development adding, "I am happy that after 42 years of collapse, this initiative has been revived." The workshop established in the 1960s collapsed as a result of poor administration and management. It was revived in 1996 after years of collapse. 6 Oct. 08 21 Oct. 08
