The All Nigerian Community (ANC), the umbrella association representing Nigerians living in Ghana has responded to a viral video by Cyrus Harvey Annan, the journalist with Toontum Network, claiming to identify the reasons behind what he described as a sharp increase in the migration of Nigerians to Ghana.
Annan in the 11-minute video, attributed this trend to Ghana’s steady electricity supply, favorable social and economic conditions, and enhanced security, particularly appealing to Nigerian youth seeking better opportunities.
The ANC in a signed statement by its President, Chief Albert Bayo Ashaolu indicated the views of Annan remain his personal opinions, however, he would address “certain inaccuracies and prevent potential misinterpretations”.
The association sought to clarify the issues raised in the video, ensuring that the well-being of Nigerians residing in Ghana and the longstanding cordial relations between the two nations remained intact.
On migration, the ANC emphasized, is a fundamental right exercised within the framework of regulations established by countries and regions worldwide. It indicated that Annan’s observations regarding the increased migration of Nigerians to Ghana should be seen as a reflection of the strong ties between the two nations and the ECOWAS protocols that facilitate free movement within the region.
Of particular concern to the ANC were Annan’s claims about the Nigerian government’s handling of crime and insecurity. He alleged that the Federal Government of Nigeria had failed to address these issues effectively and even suggested complicity within the country’s defense and security apparatus.
The ANC firmly rejected the assertions, labeling them as false and misleading. They highlighted the ongoing efforts of Nigeria’s government and law enforcement agencies to combat crime and insecurity, noting that these initiatives had already yielded positive results in several regions.
The ANC also took the opportunity to celebrate the resilience and entrepreneurial spirit of Nigerians, who have consistently thrived despite challenges. Nigerians have made remarkable contributions to global innovation and growth. Forbes Magazine, for instance, recognizes that out of the twenty-three black billionaires worldwide, six are Nigerians—a testament to the nation’s status as the Giant of Africa.
In light of these realities, the ANC urged Ghanaians to continue welcoming Nigerians and supporting their entrepreneurial endeavors. The presence of Nigerians and other law-abiding foreigners in Ghana not only reflects the country’s political and economic stability but also contributes to its aspiration of becoming a preferred international tourist destination.
The ANC further called on Ghanaians to actively nurture the strong bilateral relations between Nigeria and Ghana. By fostering understanding and cooperation between the citizens of both nations, the two countries could overcome their respective challenges and work towards achieving regional integration and prosperity for the entire West African region.
