AMA used ‘crude tactics’ to eject traders – Accra mayor

Previous administrations of the Accra Metropolitan Area (AMA) have used ineffective “crude tactics” to remove traders from authorised locations in the capital, the president’s nominee for AMA Chief Executive, Mohammed Adjei Sowah, has suggested.

Mr Sowah revealed that he would rather adopt an all-inclusive strategy to deal with the situation as he looks forward to being endorsed by the assembly to manage the affairs of the capital.

“Over the years we seem to have used crude tactics to push the hawkers from the streets, but it has not helped us and they come back all the time,” he stated on Monday, March 10.

“In this modern era, we cannot see a policeman or city guard with clubs chasing human beings selling on the streets. I don’t think it is the best way to go.”

For him, this approach “has not worked”, hence alternative ways of engaging the hawkers and traders will be more appropriate.

“I think that by engaging and talking to them we will certainly come to a conclusion as to what direction we should take,” he told Joy FM’s Dzifa Bampoe on Monday March 13.
