AMA to register 'Borla Taxi' operators

The registration will take place from 4th July to 31st July 2018 The registration will take place from 4th July to 31st July 2018

As part of efforts to bring sanity into the operations of private tricycle waste collectors popularly called ‘Borla Taxis' or 'Aboboyaa', the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has said it will begin registering all of them from Wednesday, 4th July to Tuesday, 31st July 2018, excluding Sundays.

The registration will be done at various dump sites, waste transfer stations, the AMA Waste Management Department at Kaneshie and other designated locations in the city.

A statement signed by Gilbert Nii Ankrah, Head of Public Affairs at the AMA, on Wednesday, 27 June 2018, said: “The AMA wishes to inform the general public, especially 'Borla Taxi' or 'Aboboyaa' operators that the purpose of the registration exercise is to identify all the service providers in the waste management value chain, coordinate, monitor and control their activities in pursuit of the ‘Clean Accra Project’. This is also to aid in further engagement with the operators to enhance their capacity in health and safety, environmental management and business development.

“The registration is free and mandatory, and any tricycle operating within the AMA's jurisdiction from August 2018 without the AMA embossment will be arrested and prosecuted.

“We assure the general public that adequate steps are being taken to achieve the clean Accra goal and that AMA will not hesitate to prosecute people whose actions draw us back in accordance with the law.

“The AMA wishes to call on all adjoining municipalities and district assemblies to register 'Borla Taxi' operators within their areas to support the realisation of the project goals.”
