AMA to distribute hand sanitizers, face masks to market women

After series of complaints from Ghanaians, business moguls, and some government officials that traders keep flouting the precautionary measures outlined by the Ghana Health Service to help combat the coronavirus, the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) is said to distribute hand sanitizers and face masks to Makola market women Monday, May 11, 2020.

President of Market Women Association, Mercy Naa Afrowa Needjan made this known during a Mother’s Day Programme hosted by the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection in Accra.

During the programme, she indicated that “the AMA is presenting that of the Makola market free hand sanitizers, free face mask for the market women”.

She stated that over 170,000 PPEs were handed over to the Regional Minister and district assemblies last week to share for locals.

The AMA last month launched, "Wear your nose mask" campaign to allow traders and residents of Accra to adhere to the safety protocols to help curb the spread of COVID-19 which is fast spreading.

In line with the exercise, the assembly has distributed 10,000 locally made masks freely to residents of Accra.

During the launch, the Metropolitan Chief Executive (MCE) of Accra, Mohammed Adjei Sowah, said it had become essential for people to cover their nose and mouth because the virus was spread mostly through droplets when people sneezed, coughed or talked

So far, most Ghanaians are seen wearing face masks due to the strict enforcement of the directive by the police service.
