Accra, Aug. 7, GNA - Dr. Alfred Vanderpuije, Chief Executive Officer of the Accra Metropolitan Assembly, on Friday warned estate developers who are claiming land from the Kpeshie Lagoon and other waterways in Kpeshie for building purposes to stop since the Assembly would not allow such buildings to stand.
"These illegal structures are the very reasons why we are experiencing floods in some parts of Accra and they must in no way be allowed to stand," he said.
Dr Vanderpuije gave order for all illegal structures around the Kpeshie Lagoon and all waterways to be marked for demolition within one week.
The AMA boss also visited the Achimota-Apenkwa road project which is being sponsored by the Millennium Challenge Account to assess the progress of work.
Dr Vanderpuije was unhappy that car dealers and who had been compensated to leave the streets had returned and asked them to leave within one week.
He promised to relocate all lorry stations at La Paz which might be affected by the road project to Nii Boye Town which is close by. Dr Vanderpuije said the AMA would not shirk its responsibility of decongesting the road for that project since it was an international one and government had two years to complete it.
He also visited the slums which are developing behind the Neoplan Station at Kwame Nkrumah Circle, and called for the demolition of the slums in the next two weeks. "We have announced to them our intention to demolish all unauthorized structures and notice would be served to them tomorrow since we will start with the demolition exercise in the next two weeks," he said. 7 Aug. 09
