AMA commemorates second anniversary of June 3 disaster

Minister for Works and Housing Samuel Atta Akyea has revealed that the Ministry of Finance has allocated funds to be used for desilting drains in the country to prevent the recurrence of flood disasters in the country.

In a statement read on behalf of the President, Nana Akufo-Addo during a memorial service held at the Calvary Baptist Church, Accra to mark the second anniversary of the June 3 disaster, the minister said the World Bank has agreed to support government to solve the sanitation problems in the country.

According to the Minister, government is about to construct an underground sewage system to resolve issues of flooding in the country.

For his part, the Accra Mayor, Mohamed Adjei Sowah said the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (A.M.A) will also ensure the enforcement of the National Sanitation Day which was introduced under the erstwhile Mahama administration to enable citizens clean up their surroundings.

To achieve this, the Mayor said By-law to check all city dwellers will be introduced so as to discourage bad sanitation practices in the country.

He added that depraved sub-culture by city dwellers and other human contributory factors such as dumping refuse into gutters especially during rainy season create majority of filth in the capital.

He further urged all citizens to continually embrace the culture of cleanliness and also adopt a positive change of attitude towards the environment.

A wreath-laying ceremony was also held in commemoration of those who lost their lives during the June 3, 2015 flood and fire disaster.

One hundred and fifty-four people lost their lives as a result of the disaster, about GHC1.6 million worth of property was lost, seventeen motor vehicles and a fuel tanker was burnt without recognition and badly burnt victims are still on admission in hospitals.
