AI can revolutionise Ghana's agriculture sector – Dr Bryan Acheampong

The Member of Parliament for Abetifi, Dr Bryan Acheampong, has highlighted the transformative potential of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the agricultural sector.

Speaking at a public lecture organised by UniMAC on June 26, 2025, under the theme “AI Disruption and Future Works,” the technologist and policy scholar emphasised that AI tools can help farmers identify crop diseases using mobile phone images, forecast ideal planting schedules based on climate data, and strategically plan harvests to maximize market opportunities.

He stressed that these innovations are not distant possibilities but urgent necessities for a sector heavily impacted by climate variability, land degradation, and post-harvest losses.

Dr Acheampong noted that scaling up these solutions could shift agriculture from a basic survival activity to a dynamic, data-driven industry that attracts the youth and drives economic growth.

He urged the public to imagine farmers using AI-powered mobile apps to detect crop diseases or machine learning models to forecast market prices based on weather patterns and regional demand.

"In a region grappling with climate variability, land degradation, and supply chain inefficiencies, these tools are essential, not optional,” he stated.

“By integrating AI into agriculture, we can reduce post-harvest losses, increase productivity, and transform farming into a high-tech profession that appeals to young people,” he added.

Bryan Acheampong argued that this could be a game changer for the agricultural sector, offering new opportunities for farmers and contributing significantly to food security and economic growth.
