AG Cases: 'Isn't it better to take the money?' – Kwesi Pratt on uniBank case

Veteran journalist and Managing Editor of the Insight newspaper, Kwesi Pratt Jnr, has backed Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Dr Dominic Akuritinga Ayine’s recovery of 60% of the assets in the uniBank case.

Adding his voice to the matter — which has since sparked widespread public conversations and criticisms — Pratt, while speaking on Peace FM on July 29, 2025, argued that it is advantageous for the state to negotiate with the accused persons to recover a portion of the assets, rather than risk losing the case entirely and gaining nothing in return.

He referred to several cases where the state neither recovered assets nor pursued prosecution against the accused individuals.

Pratt stated that in the Beige Capital Bank case, if the Attorney General had accepted the offer made by the legal team of the accused, the state would have — if for nothing else — secured GH¢10 million.

Instead, the state lost both the money and saw the individual acquitted.

“Recently, court acquitted Beige Capital which means the country is not getting any money from that case. They offered to pay GH¢10million but the Attorney General rejected it. If he had taken the offer, the state would have recovered at least that amount in its coffers. Now, the state didn’t recover any money and the accused persons are walking free,” he said.

Pratt also cited the Ambulance case, where the state's decision to prioritise the prosecution of accused individuals ultimately led to the case being discharged.

He supported the AG’s approach, which he believes reflects the principles applied in the uniBank case and is now being replicated in the NSS case, which appears to be yielding positive results.

“There is also the ambulance case where we focused on prosecution than asset recovery, which in the end, the country lost both. The AG weighed the possibility of the accused persons getting acquitted in court that is why they settled with recovering assets. In his judgement, it is advantageous for the state to take the assets rather than not get anything at all. How does this not make sense?

“In the NSS case, that is the same approach the AG wants to take and due to that, some of the accused persons have come forward to testify to help the case in court. They have also said they want to return some of the loot to the state. By this, he is using the principles in the Kwabena Duffour case in the NSS case…” he added.
