A weekly feature on the Ghana Premier League - Strikers early to the party

Accra Hearts of Oak defeated their local rivals Great Accra Olympics Accra Hearts of Oak defeated their local rivals Great Accra Olympics

A festival of goals ensued as the Ghana premier league recorded its highest goal haul thus far. Every fixture produced at least a goal in week 6 to surpass the 20 goal mark for the first time this season.

Inter Allies and Aduana Stars opened the floodgates for the avalanche of goals on Saturday. Aduana Stars came from a goal down to defeat Inter Allies by 2 goals to 1 to cement their grip on top spot. Isaac Twum’s opener was leveled by Nathaniel Asamoah before inform Derrick Sasraku struck the winner.

The Accra derby involving the capital’s two most glamorous Hearts of Oak and Great Olympics had all the elements in an exciting derby. The landlords(Hearts) called the bluff of the rent boys(Olympics) in a 2-1 victory to secure the bragging rights until their next fixture.

Liberty Professionals responded well after falling behind to beat Ebusua Dwarfs by 2 goals to 1 at the Carl Reindorf.

Elmina Sharks seem to have found their rhythm at home with a second win on the trot. They defeated Berekum Chelsea by 2 goals to 1 . But for the numerous missed chances a bigger margin would have been recorded at the Nduom Stadium in Edina.

Tema Youth went to Sogakope, drew first blood but couldn’t hold on as West Africa Football Academy turned it around to win 2-1 in a battle of who plays best on artificial turf.

The struggles of Ashanti Gold FC against Brong Ahafo clubs continued as they fell to FA cup holders Bechem United by 4 goals to 2. This defeat meant back to back defeats to BA teams in 7 days for the 4 time league champions.

Champions Wa All Stars pulled one of the upsets of the week pipping Medeama SC by a lone goal at the Tarkwa park. With a game in hand and on 10 points the champions are back on track in their bid to defend their title.

Lowly Bolga All Stars pegged back and held Asante Kotoko to a 1 all draw game in Tamale. Asante Kotoko by this result slips to 2 points adrift league leaders Aduana Stars.

STRIKERS EARLY TO THE PARTY..

The moans and groans which has characterized the perennial goal scoring conundrum in the Ghana premier league would have been put to bed at least for now with the kind of return strikers have given so far.

In a league where defences are very mean and goals come in handy at regular intervals it’s refreshing to see strikers up the ante to upset the long standing order of paltry average goal per game syndrome. The routine monopoly and at best duopoly in the race to the top scorer crown seem to have taken a new twist with several players in the hunt, making their intentions clear early on this term.

The goals have trickled in fairly well and fast with a host of known and unknown suspects in the thick of events. At such a time when teams are very much conservative and sizing up each other it’s quite encouraging to have 8 strikers finding the net three or more times in six games.

A known character, tormentor in chief and an individual who knows the terrain inside out in the shape of Ahmed Toure leads the top scorer pile with 5 goals in 6 games netting two braces in the process. He is closely followed by a relatively unknown Seth Appiah of Berekum Chelsea and Derrick Sasraku of Aduana Stars on 4 goals. A household name in the annals of the local game, Yakubu Mohammed and Ebusua Dwarf’s leading marksman Nicholas Gyan have four goals apiece as well.

Hans Kwofie, Abel Manomey and Richard Arthur all on 3 goals follow in that order.

With strikers early to the party in the Ghana premier league the expectation of fans is to once again see a striker who will cross the 20 goal barrier after Ishmael Addo in the early 2000s.

Danke!
