The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) in the Ashanti Region has impounded 22 commercial vehicles for charging unapproved transport fares.
In addition to the impoundments, the assembly imposed fines ranging from GH₵500 to GH₵1,000 on the offending vehicles and has threatened to prosecute repeat offenders.
The enforcement action was carried out by the KMA's Taskforce in the Central Business District (CBD) on Tuesday, June 10, 2025.
The exercise aimed to ensure compliance with the 15 per cent fare reduction agreed upon between transport unions and the Ministry of Transport.
The KMA had previously warned commercial drivers to adhere to the newly announced fare rates following numerous complaints and public outcry.
However, some drivers ignored the warning and continued to charge unapproved fares, with some even exceeding previous rates during evening hours.
Mr Randy Wilson, Head of the Transport Department at the KMA, told Kumasi FM's Elisha Adarkwah that the enforcement exercise would continue, and anyone found violating the fare regulations again would face consequences.
He urged passengers to board vehicles only from approved transport stations and to look out for vehicles displaying KMA stickers.
Additionally, Mr Wilson warned drivers to refrain from loading passengers in unauthorized areas to avoid arrest.
The KMA has instituted a fine of up to GHS1,000 for vehicles found loading passengers in unauthorized areas within the CBD.
