A 40-year old man before court for defilement

Kumasi, June 28, GNA-A 40-year old farmer at Brodekwano near Kuntanase in the Bosomtwe-Atwima-Kwanwoma district of Ashanti who allegedly defiled a three-year old girl was on Monday granted 100 million cedis bail by a Kumasi circuit court. Yaw Amankwaah the culprit pleaded not guilty to the charge and will re-appear on 27th July, 2005.

Police Chief Inspector Janet Oseiwaah told the court, presided over by Mr Adutwum Mmorosa that the accused's house was close to the house where the victim and her grandmother were living at Brodekwano. She said sometime in July 2004, the grandmother of the victim left her in the care of one Adwoa Salamatu who also left her in the company of her peers and went to fetch water.

Chief Inspector Oseiwaa said the accused went for the child and took her to his house and defile her. She said upon her return, Salamatu the complainant saw the victim bleeding from her private art and blood on her legs and this alarmed the complainant. The prosecution said when the complainant questioned the victim as to what had happened to her, she mentioned the accused person as the one who defiled her.

Chief Inspector Oseiwaah said the complainant therefore, rushed the victim to Borodekwano clinic, who referred her to the Saint Michael's Catholic hospital at Pramso where upon examination, the complainant was asked to report to the police for a medical for. She said the complainant therefore, made a report to the Kuntanase police who arrested the accused the next day and based upon the medical report, the accused was charged with the offence.
