‘NPP will form broad-based govt’ -Kufuor

THE Flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Mr J. A. Kufuor, has reiterated that the party will form a broad-based government if it wins power in the December 28 run-off.

The Flagbearer gave the assurance at a rally organised at James Town in Accra to thank the people of Greater Accra for their support in the December 7 general elections.

It was also to give the platform for the rest of the opposition parties to openly endorse their support for the NPP Flagbearer, Mr Kufour.

Present at the rally were the flagbearers of the Convention Peoples Party (CPP) and the United Ghana Movement (UGM). The People’s National Convention (PNC) was represented by the running-mate, Mr Baah Ntim, and the National Reform Party (NRP) by the national chairman, Mr Peter Kpordugbe.

Dan Lartey of the GCPP was absent.

Mr Kufuor used the occasion to give credit to Ghanaians in their quest for a positive change which, he said, is an act of God.

He said the declaration of support by the other parties was based on their own free will and has no strings attached.

“It is purely based on their genuine desire to effect a positive change in government,” he said.

The CPP Flagbearer, Prof. George Hagan, pledged his party’s co-operation with the NPP to dislodge the PNDC/NDC rule.

He further explained that the CPP as a party, after all, originally emanated from the UGCC.

Dr Wereko Brobby, who did not speak at length, urged his supporters to vote for Mr Kufuor to ensure a resounding victory.

Similar messages ran through the speeches of the representatives of the other parties.

The Minority Leader in Parliament, Mr J. H. Mensah, who was cheerfully welcomed to the podium, told the crowd that the party has a team of experienced men, capable of serving them well.

He particularly assured the people of the Volta Region that an NPP government will never neglect their needs.

Mr Mensah expressed his gratitude to the people of the Brong Ahafo Region for realising the need for a positive change.

The MP for Abuakwa, Nana Akuffo Addo, who was forced to the stage by the crowd, said the change Ghanaians are yearning for is not a change in leadership but a change devoid of corruption and abuse of human rights and which will bring about happiness among the rank and file.
