52 households in Ga Mashie to get free toilets

The Chief Executive Officer of the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA), Mohammed Adjei Sowah has called on the people of Ga Mashie to lead the quest to make the President’s vision of making Accra the cleanest city in Africa a reality.

According to him, since the President’s declaration of making Accra the cleanest city was at Mantse Agbona in James Town, Accra, it behoves residents to support initiatives towards the realisation of the vision.

The Mayor said this in a speech read on his behalf by the Chief Resilience and Sustainability Advisor to the Mayor of Accra, Desmond Appiah at the launch of the Inner Cities Household Toilet Project in Ga Mashie on Wednesday.

More than 1,000 people from 52 households within Ga Mashie in the Greater Accra Region would benefit from a subsidised toilet facility to help eradicate open defecation in the area.

The facility spearheaded by the Ministry of Inner City and Zongo Development (ICZD) in collaboration with the Ga Mashie Development Agency (GAMADA) and the Greater Accra Metropolitan Area (GAMA) Sanitation and Water Project, is aimed at supporting and acquiring an improved toilet facility which is under the Greater Accra Metropolitan Area (GAMA) project.

He pointed out that a lot had been done to keep the city clean and develop the area citing the construction of the James Town Harbour, liquid waste treatment plants , and the Integrated Recycling and Compost Plant as evidence and urged residents to support the agenda to make the city clean.

“We need your support as Chiefs and people to implement sustainable measures to manage the waste we generate properly,” to mitigate the current waste management challenges facing the city,” he said.

He expressed his appreciation to the Minister for Inner City and Zongo Development, for the gesture and was hopeful it would go a long way to complement efforts aimed at eradicating open defecation and keep the beaches clean.



The Minister of Inner City and Zongo Development, Mustapha Abdul Hamid in his keynote address said the project was not only targeted at providing toilet facilities for residents in the enclave of inner cities but also aimed at restoring human dignity through seeking an end to open defecation.

“…this project is going to bring relief to 52 household in our inner city and even if we were to say to say that every household has just 20 people, 20 times 52 is a lot of number and that gives expression to President Akufo-Addo’s vision that we need to create a society of opportunity for everybody irrespective of where they live…,” he said.

The Minister admonished landlords to as a matter of necessity create spaces in their homes for the construction of a household toilet in the subsequent phase of the project and appealed to the traditional authorities to use their influence to stop the issue of open defecation in the area in order to attract tourists in the country.

“I can assure you, all of the issues that bedevil inner city citizens, I am aware of those problems and I am going to resolve those challenges…one step at a time,” he pledged.
